Granite cleaning, sealing and polishing can be quite hard with out the correct chemicals and equipment. Granite floors can come in many types and colours. This floor was polished granite and was black star galaxy. These floors are very popular and have a wonderful mirror finish when new. Unfortunately over time polished granite tiles can become dull, and look tired. This can happen for a number of reasons.
Granite floors are often maintained with the incorrect products. Often wash and shine products are used to help maintained the shine on polished granite like this one. Wash and shine products often leave a superficial shine on the floor which looks great for a few a hours after if has been used. Unfortunately these products leave a residue on the floor which creates this superficial shine. Over the weeks this residue will build up and actually impair the original, natural shine of your tiles. This can be simply fixed by a professional, by stripping back the superficial layer which is sat on top of your tiles, causing them to look dull. Once stripped back, and neutralised your tiles should only require and quick buff and should look a good as new again.
Another problem that can cause your granite floor tiles to look dull and tired in areas can be simply, high levels of soil age and dirt. Unsuitable cleaning products can actually help dirt stick to your tiles and the dirt and cleaning agent can mix together and dry hard, sticking to your tiles. This process repeated week after week can leave your tiles looking very dull. Many people think that there tiles need to be polished, but an intensive clean can be all they need to bring your tiles back to life. One way to check for large levels of dirt building up, can be from the amount trapped in our grout.
The picture above shows high levels of dirt in the grout and your can actually see where the layer of dirt is dulling the shine of the lights on the tiles. With just a light clean, you can clearly see the lights in the tiles have become more visible.
In some cases, cleaning alone won’t bring your tiles back to life and they will require a polish. Granite polishes are few and far between. granite is not like marble and quick fixes like crystalizers do not work with granite. Also, spray diamond polishing pads are not effective on highly polished marble, as the stone is so tough.
Specialist equipment like Klindex machines which heated plates have be used to do the final polish on granite floors, or specialist polishes, but what ever the system, they need to be used by professionals, with a great deal of experience. Any polish that is sold for the domestics market for polishing granite, you can be assured that this will be a superficial coating, that will give you a quick fix and probably do more damage than good when used frequently.
If in doubt, use a professional neutral cleaner, and also rinse thoroughly after use.
